Make Mine Mini

When I began working in mixed media several years ago I started with some square panels of wood that were 2.5" x 2.5" on up to about 5.5" x 5.5". I never intended to make it a habit of working on a such small scale but it was fun so I kept at it. Only problem was I never felt like I had enough time for creating. I can't remember where but I read about the "5-10 minute rule" that it sounded worth giving a try. I would pop into my studio for 5-10 minutes in the morning before I left for work, glue a few things, cut or paint a few papers, then get in another 5-10 minutes when I got home and sometimes again before I went to bed. I was amazed at how much could be accomplish this way. I'm lucky enough to have some bigger blocks of time these days but I can still put that rule into action when the schedule gets crazy and creativity time is hard to come by.

Late last year Cloth Paper Scissors magazine announced a readers challenge called "Make Mine Mini". It was a call for art work that was 4" x 4" or smaller. I had an unfinished 2.5" x 2.5" piece so I made it my goal to get it finished and send it in for consideration. In January, I found out that I was chosen as a finalist and might have my work published in a future issue of the magazine. They didn't let anyone know ahead of time so I had to wait until the May/June issue came out. Looking through my issue when it finally arrived in the mail and there it was, my work on page 87! It's always a thrill to see your work in print.

'Carve it Up'

It was so long ago I had forgotten that I sent an entry to the Cloth Paper Scissors Magazine 'Carve it Up' reader's challenge back in November. It was an unexpected thrill to see my entry (the pink Bleeding Heart relief print) as I flipped through the pages of my recently received March/April issue.

I love Bleeding Hearts. I have quite a few of these plants in my garden and it won't be long before they will be in full spring bloom. They reseed so easily that every year I have plenty to give away to friends and can share the love.

As I turned to the next page (86) I recognized a name from a blog I've been following for the past six months or so. The black and orange fish print shown below was made by Kim Henkel.  More of her creative endeavors can be seen at her blog Letting in the Light where she generously shares her artwork, ideas, techniques and experiments. Some of the truly unique and beautiful pieces Kim makes with tea bags are highlighted in her "Tea Bags and Creations" post from March 3rd. The inspiration of her warm and earthy palette stands out in these photos from where she lives through the long winter's of Canada.

Fabric Swatch Exchange

I received my copy of Cloth Paper Scissors magazine in the mail yesterday. As I was flipping through the pages I saw the fabric swatch that I designed and sent in as part of an exchange. How exciting is that!
July/August 2011 issue

Page 82, upper left corner - that's me!

my fabric swatch - their photo is much better than mine.
The object of the exchange was to design an 18” x 36” piece of fabric using any technique (stamp, paint, dye, transfer, etc) you wanted. Cut into 9”x 9” squares and shipped to the magazine to be exchanged. In return, to each participant, the magazine sent 6 randomly chosen swatches designed by some of the other 200 artists who took part in the exchange. I love the variety of swatches I received and it will be fun thinking of ways to use them

Here are a few of the swatches I received. Aren't they beautiful?
